Spectacular TV for the price

Pros:

1. Vivid and very clear picture, especially with native 1080P content. The Smart Dimming (active LED zone dimming) feature does make a subtle improvement to the picture, so I recommend leaving it on.

2. Smart TV dock with common applications such as Amazon Instant Video, NetFlix, Hulu Plus, and more. Also may be customized.

3. WiFi and Ethernet connectivity. Ethernet is the preferred way since WiFi can be unreliable.

4. Nearly borderless.

5. 3 HDMI connections and a whole host of analog connections. Digital audio out (optical).

6. 120 Hz. I have not noticed significant judder.

7. Almost effortless picture tweaking by selecting "Calibrated" mode. This produces the best and most natural picture for a well-lit room without over-blowing the colors.

8. Blacks are very deep, and much better than my older 42" CCFL backlit Vizio TV.

9. Remote is very nice and feels sturdy. Buttons are on the small side, however.

Cons:

1. Picture is not going to rival a $1,500 Sony or Samsung, but the picture is still very good.

2. Viewing angles are OK for this set, but don't expect to get too far from front and center. Washout of the colors will occur starting at more than 20 degrees from head-on horizontally, and about 40 degrees vertically.

3. No ability to adjust how the motion compensation feature works. Older Vizio TVs allowed you to select the degree of aggressiveness of the feature. The user's manual shows the option, but the option is not actually found in the TV menu system.

4. WiFi is only 2.4 GHz. This is a major problem in my book. If you intend to stream and are in a place congested with 2.4 GHz networks, you really need 5 GHz.Read more ›

Articulated mounting brackets for flat screen TVs offer significant advantages over fixed and tilting. The angle of the screen can be adjusted both vertically and horizontally as the screen can be moved away from the wall when required. Despite this they are unobtrusive when the screen is returned to its basic position. Some of these brackets even allow you to move the screen around a corner!

As you would expect articulated brackets cost more. When you consider though how much you have spent on your new TV it may be worth the extra to get the very best out of it.

With any of these options you should obviously only attempt to do the job yourself if you are absolutely sure that you are able to do it properly. If not then get advice or get someone in to do it for you; there is no shortage of small firms who will do this type of installation for a reasonable cost.

Understanding Hi-Def TVs

When you go out to shop for your first high-def TV, you may be confused by the many, many different specifications you'll find on each. While a complete description of the different specs would take a book, you can learn more than just the difference between plasma and LCD in just the next couple of minutes.

Start with that difference. The three basic types of high-def TVs available today are the LCD TV, the plasma TV, and the DLP TV, a modern version of the old projection television. LCDs and DLPs are back-lit, making it harder to display clear black colors; plasma TVs are lit in a somewhat different manner, so they have very realistic blacks, but they tend to be a little more expensive and a lot more delicate. A DLP TV usually looks good, and the back lighting is simple to switch out for anyone, giving it perhaps the longest lifespan of any other high-def TV out there, and if you have a projector rather than an enclosed system, you can scale the picture to fit your space - a nice advantage. But DLP TVs are also likely to have the worst picture of the three.

Next, size. All high def TVs have a wide aspect ratio, so instead of the nearly-square traditional television screen shape, they have a movie-theatre shaped screen, often called 16:9 aspect ratio. This doesn't vary, so don't worry about that. (Regular TVs, for comparison, have a 4:3 aspect ratio, though this is hardly ever cited.) Screens are measured on the diagonal, so a high def TV may seem smaller than a traditional TV with the same listed screen size - and it is unlikely to fit smoothly into the same space. Keep this in mind.

Resolution is more complicated. Traditional TV has 480i resolution. This means that the picture on the screen is shown in 480 lines; the "i" stands for "interlaced", meaning that odd lines are shown first, then even lines, with about a sixtieth of a second of display before switching. Our vision tricks us into thinking this is a smooth screen. Rarer 480p TVs have all the lines shown at once, and you'll notice a distinctly better picture.

On high-def televisions, on the other hand, sets start at 720p; most are right around 1080p. Watch this; you want to make sure every video peripheral, like blu-ray readers and cable boxes, are compatible with this resolution. A mismatch here is the number-one reason your high-def TV may not look as good as it should. Also, more is not better; while you can get better than 1080p, if your peripherals don't match (and most won't), you won't get a good picture.

All standard high-def TVs will have specs falling in the following ranges. Try to keep your TV and your peripherals matched as closely as possible, and you'll have the best viewing experience.

* 1080 lines with 1920 vertical pixels; 16:9 aspect ratio; and either 60i, 30p, or 24p display (referencing time between refreshes)
* 720 lines with 1280 vertical pixels; 16:9 aspect ratio; and either 60i, 30p, or 24p display
* 480 lines with 704 vertical pixels; 16:9 or 4:3 aspect ratio; and either 60p, 60i, 30p, or 24p display

When choosing a high-def TV, more lines is generally better, 16:9 is better, and a high number plus p makes for the best display. And while HDTV is backward compatible with traditional broadcast, it's smart to invest in HD channels; the picture is much, much better with a high-def TV.

This for me is the 2nd phase that commenced in the early nineties right up to the present.

So there you have it. About a hundred years for animal drawn carriages to evolve to mechanical vehicles, and from then on, enhancements fly by so fast that our world is transformed in 2 decades and less. GPS guidance, pilot-less, voice or motion activated, satellite-tracked, iris scanning and many more widgets that have now become the standard. But latest models are only as good as the next release that's being readied for launch. From then on, it's that dreaded free-fall we know as 'depreciation', and the wait for the next model.

We'd speculate on whats next, because those at the forefront of innovation are now launching products that we didn't ever know we'd need. In the past, concepts and production were guided by market research and analysis, driven by you and me. Today, they're out in front of us, telling us what we will need in our futures. Production and shipping, is then only a few clicks away.

If you're a die-hard Black Friday or Boxing Day shopper, then my two cents on the next wave shouldn't faze you. Lets face it: nothings going to stop you from doing what you've got to do. In fact your last indulgence isn't a month old at the time of this article, so go ahead and enjoy your toy(s). My views are intended for those who'd wait for their next 'Objets désirés'. Smart-phones: The newest mobile communication standard is known as LTE (Long Term Evolution) that carriers tested with little publicity over the last 2-3 years. From what I know, Android & Windows mobile devices are early adopters, and Apple hasn't yet fallen in line. While LTE is described as 3.9G (just short of 4G), carriers are now preparing for 'LTE Advanced' that will meet 4G and beyond. There's a good chance the next iPhone will adopt this standard.

What this really means: No more latency in streaming or gaming; interactive content is going to come at you instantaneously. Your online experience would be super-fast!

TVs: Unless you live in a trade-embargo zone, you'd have noticed by now that prices of LCDs & Plasmas have been dropping so low that even those who don't watch TV, now have a large screen on their wish list. You could take advantage now, unless you'd prefer to wait for the next wave, which is a battle between 3D & OLED (organic light-emitting diode). While you already know of 3D, a quick interpretation of OLED is a thinner screen that emits a richer and a more vibrant experience than even LCDs or Plasmas! Several smartphones already use OLED and you can expect to see these in TVs within 2012.

Tablets: Somewhere around mid-year 2012, the dust should settle on the tablet wars and we'll see who is still standing. That Apple & Samsung will dominate is a no-brainer, but the question would be of whats changed with surviving contenders. In my view key features that would stand out are processing speeds, display screens and mobility. New models are coming at us this spring, and you already know which those would be. Whether you'd discard your PC for a tablet is also up for debate, but any which way, we can agree that (apps) applications are cutting to the chase for instant gratification.

Despite new versions, you've got to know that stretching your existing device is also an option, but only up until there's no further support or when irreversibly damaged.

Misek expects that an Apple television will have a $1,250 average selling price.
