2014 Fantasy Football Mock Draft

When it comes to fantasy football drafts, I am always amused when people start producing mock drafts well in advance of Labor Day weekend. There are too many unknowns due to injuries, position battles and stupidity to make them worthwhile. I suppose if you are in a league that mandates that you draft weeks before the season starts, it makes sense but, even that cracks me up. If it is a league for fun, go crazy. However, most of us have a vested financial interest in how our team does and I sure as hell don't want any of my top picks missing time due to non-regular season injury or off-the-field issue. It is pretty interesting to see the shift in average draft position in the weeks leading up to the season. Players like Steven Ridley and Cam Newton have cratered and players like James White and Emmanuel Sanders have shot up.

Mock drafts can vary greatly depending on the scoring system, especially when using Points Per Reception, and whether or not the league is a redraft league or a dynasty league. For our purposes, this is a standard fantasy football league scoring system for a redraft league.

This assumes a starting roster of 1 QB, 2 RBs, 3 WRs, 1 TE, 1 K and 1 D/ST. Points would be awarded for the following actions:

• Passing: 1 point for every 25 yards, 4 points for each Touchdown, and -2 for each Interception
• Rushing: 1 point for every 10 yards, 6 points for each Touchdown, and -2 for each fumble lost
• Receiving: 1 point for every 10 yards, 6 points for each Touchdown
• Kicking: 3 points for every Field Goal made and 1 point for each successful Extra Point
• Defense: 2 points for each fumble recovered, 2 points for each interception, 1 point for each sack, 2 points for a shutout and 2 points for a safety

Evaluation: Having one of the top 5 picks is easy since you could make a case for any of those running backs. After that, it is a bit sketchy as there is great depth at tight end and quarterback this year. It is nice to think about a team with Jimmy Graham or Peyton Manning on it, but I would prefer a running back to start my team off and build around.

I like Sanders if I want a WR here or Bell if I want a RB. He had great numbers last year, even in a split role. That role should continue this year with him getting the red zone work. Plus, Reggie isn't Mr. Durability.

Lee and Matthews could end up being the primary receiving options on their respective teams. Wheaton, Smith and Evans may also put up significant numbers as should Ertz at the TE position.

Seattle showed that they believe in Baldwin by giving him a contract to earn and Stills showed decent rapport with Brees last season, but you can't expect consistent production from him.

Who Will Win The 2014 Super Bowl?

The big game is a few days away and there is plenty of hype, hoopla and excitement about this year's match up between the Denver Broncos and the Seattle Seahawks.

Sports pundits and sports fans are talking a lot about the Seattle defense and Payton Manning's record breaking season. They are also considering how cold weather might impact the game.

The odds makers have made the Broncos at two and a half point favorite at the time that this column is being written.

My pal, colleague, quant expert and coauthor of one of my books, Who Will Win The Big Game: The 50 Characteristics Of Championship Teams, Coaches And Athletes, tells me that a lot of the data favor the Seattle Seahawks.

And the Seahawks fine coach, the powerful running game and dynamic quarterback make them a very fine football squad.

And while I placed a wager on the Seahawks to win it all when I was in Las Vegas, ten months ago, I think "Payton Manning will hit pay dirt in this year's Super Bowl."

Here's why...

I have been watching football for more time and for more years than my wife wants to think about and I have never seen a quarterback throw the ball so consistently and so efficiently as Payton Manning is throwing it now.

The offensive line seems to give Payton all the time he needs to deliver a short pass, medium length pass or long pass. He is making every throw.

Manning and the Broncos are also coming off a very fine performance against the Patriots. This dominating performance should give the Broncos some positive momentum coming into this week's big game.

In addition, he does some very unique things when he is running the offense. His ability to read defenses, change plays and get rid of the ball very quickly sets him apart from most of the quarterbacks in the league.

Payton Manning can create a great deal of illusion, which, in my view, can unsettle even Pete Carroll's super defense.

Also, I believe that Manning has additional motivation because winning another Super Bowl will cause people to view him as one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time.

So, the team from the Mile High City, which now may have many mile high fans as a result of the legalization of marihuana, will probably have a lot to celebrate on Sunday night.

Who Will Win The Lombardi Trophy In 2014?

Every year I make bold predictions about which teams in the NFL will stand tall, and which ones will be looking up at the powerhouses. Okay, in all honesty, it's hard to accurately predict these because of injuries and free agencies. Yeah, that's my excuse! Anyway, let's see if I can get this one right. Let's see if I can correctly predict the two Superbowl teams, and the winner of the 2014 Lombardi Trophy.

Let's begin in the AFC East, where the Patriots should win this division going away. I mean, the Patriots still have Tom Brady. Enough said. This team has looked great in the preseason! Leave it to Head Coach Bill Belichick to get his team to rise above the crushing loss of his two biggest weapons, Tight Ends Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez. Adversity is laughable to Belichick. He loves a challenge! The closest team in this division, behind the Patriots, will be the Miami Dolphins, who I think will be much improved.

The AFC North belongs to the Cincinnati Bengals this season. They are faster, and more potent on offense with the addition of BenJarvus Green-Ellis and rookie Giovani Bernard. There is no excuse for this team not winning this division in 2013-14, and no excuse for them not going deep into the playoffs! The Ravens will finish a close second to Cincinnati.

The AFC South looks like a two team race again this season between Indianapolis and Houston. Andrew Luck was VERY good in his rookie season, and I think he'll be better this season. The Colts win this division, with the Texans and oft injured Matt Schaub and Arian Foster two games behind.

The AFC West is the Denver Broncos' division to lose. Peyton Manning now has Wes Welker as an additional target, along with Demaryius Thomas and Eric Decker. The Broncos were so close to advancing to the AFC Championship game in January. I would be shocked if they don't win this division. The Chiefs, with new head coach Andy Reid and quarterback Alex Smith, may make a push for the division, but it won't be good enough. They finish second.

The NFC East will be a battle between the New York Giants and the Washington Redskins. I'm not convinced that RGIII is healthy enough to last for 16 games. This is too close to call. This division is going to come down to the final game of the season, a December 29 game at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. The Giants win that game and the division. The Redskins finish a close second but still make the playoffs.

The NFC North looks like it's a given for the Green Bay Packers, but hold on, the Chicago Bears have something to say about that. The Bears look much improved during the preseason. New head coach Marc Trestman has breathed new life into this Bears team. I like the way they look! I expect Jay Cutler to be better, along with the offense that includes wide receiver Brandon Marshall, and running backs Matt Forte and Michael Bush. That defense will be a force as well, led by linebackers Lance Briggs and rookie Jon Bostic. Let's give the nod in this division to Green Bay, with the Bears close behind, just missing the playoffs.

The NFC South is pretty simple. It's a two horse race, and the New Orleans Saints are the thoroughbreds of the division. Coach Sean Payton is back after a year long suspension, Drew Brees is hungry for another division title, and the Saints will win this division by at least two games. The Atlanta Falcons added running back Steven Jackson, dealt from St. Louis, they still have tight end Tony Gonzalez, and quarterback Matt Ryan. I think the Falcons lose twice to the Saints this season, and that will be the difference in the division race.

Finally, the NFC West, a division full of gunslingers and power backs. San Francisco advanced to the Superbowl in January behind quarterback Colin Kaepernick, and Seattle made the playoffs with rookie quarterback Russell Wilson leading the way. The 49ers have running back Frank Gore, but the Seahawks have running back Marshawn Lynch. See how even this is? The Seahawks came within a whisker of reaching the NFC Championship game last season. They dominated the 49ers late in the season. The 49ers won the NFC West, and if not for a stunning loss to Atlanta in the playoffs, we would be talking about the Seahawks as the winners of the NFC. This is such a tough division to predict, but I think Seattle comes out on top, with the 49ers close behind.

Finally we come to the playoffs. The six playoff teams in the AFC will be New England, Cincinnati, Baltimore, Indianapolis, Houston and Denver. The AFC Champion will be Denver, a 20-17 winner over New England in the title game.

The NFC playoff teams will be the New York Giants, Washington, Green Bay, New Orleans, Seattle and San Francisco. The NFC champion will be New Orleans, a 24-17 winner over Green Bay in the title game.

New Orleans defeats Denver 34-31 in overtime to win the Lombardi Trophy!

Comparing John Elway to Every Other Denver Broncos Quarterback in History

Over the years, the Denver Broncos have had some great players on their team. When it comes to Denver Broncos greats though, it is hard for any player to match up with John Elway. With that in mind, here is a look at how much better John Elway was statistically than other Broncos quarterbacks the team has had.

John Elway's biggest statistical advantage is his longevity with the team. He played for Denver from 1983 to 1998, no other quarterback has played more than a handful of years there. Over the course of is career, Elway appeared in 234 regular season games. Craig Morton is the next closes in games played as a quarterback for Denver with just 72.

John Elway was also a great quarterback ability wise too, always ranking among the best in the league in most categories. He threw for 51,475 yards during his career, the next closest Broncos quarterback was again Craig Morton with 11,895. He's followed closely in third place by Brian Griese with 11,763 and Jake Plummer in fourth place with 11,631. Elway had 300 touchdown passes during his career which far outshines Craig Morton's 74, the 71 each by Brian Griese and Jake Plummer, and the 54 by Jay Cutler.

John Elway had a career quarterback rating of 79.9, which was very good, but not the best ever by a Denver Broncos quarterback. The regular starters that rate above him include 87.1 by Jay Cutler, 84.3 by Jake Plummer, and 84.1 by Brian Griese. Those with quarterback ratings below Elways include Craig Morton with 79.1, Steve DeBerg with 74.3, and Gary Kubiak with 70.6.

Everyone knows that John Elway will go down in history as one of the best quarterbacks in NFL history. It's interesting though to look at just how much better he was than any other quarterback the Denver Broncos have had in their history.

The Best Quarterbacks in Denver Broncos History

The Denver Broncos have a long history as one of the better teams in the National Football League.  The Broncos were a charter member of the old American Football League (AFL) and were not very successful for their first decade in professional football.  The Broncos joined the NFL in the 1970 AFL-NFL merger and by the mid-1970s had developed into one of the teams that other teams had to worry about.  Like most teams in professional football, the team's successes are somewhat reflective of who their starting quarterback was at the time.

Here is a look at the best quarterbacks in Denver Broncos history.

John Elway

By far, the best quarterback that the Denver Broncos have ever had is John Elway.  Elway joined the team in the mid-1980s and quickly established himself as one of the most successful quarterbacks in the league.  He was the primary starting quarterback for the team from 1983 through the 1998 season, never playing for any other franchise.  He retired from the league holding every significant team quarterback record in the Broncos record book including most career completions, most career attempts, most passing yards, most touchdown passes, and more.  He also held many single season team passing records including most touchdown passes in one season.  John Elway took the Broncos to five Super Bowls as their quarterback, losing the first three before winning back to back titles in his last two years in the league.  During his career, Elway would be named the league MVP once, the Super Bowl MVP once, and would also be a nine time Pro Bowler.

Craig Morton

After spending the bulk of his career with the Dallas Cowboys, followed by a little over two seasons with the New York Giants, Craig Morton joined the Denver Broncos as their starting quarterback in 1977.  He was immediately successful, leading the Broncos to a 12-2 record, two playoff victories and an appearance in the Super Bowl which they ended up losing to the Cowboys.  Morton would go on to lead the Broncos for the next four seasons as well, and only one time during his time as the team's starting quarterback did they finish the season with fewer than ten victories.  In reward for the amazing season he contributed to for the Broncos in 1977, Morton was named the NFL Comeback Player of the Year.  At the time he retired from the league, one season before the Broncos acquired John Elway, Craig Morton held many of the team's passing records.

Jake Plummer

After being one of the better quarterbacks in the league for a number of years even though he was playing for a team considered to be one of the less impressive, the Arizona Cardinals, Jake Plummer joined the Denver Broncos to be their starting quarterback in 2003.  During his four seasons with the team he would put up an impressive record of 39-15 as a starting quarterback.  He is listed third or fourth overall in many career passing categories in Broncos history and he also put up a number of impressive single season statistics too like being tied with John Elway for most touchdown passes in a season at 27.  Until outdone by Jay Cutler in 2008, Jake Plummer also held the record for most passing yards in a season by a Denver Broncos quarterback.

Brief History of the Denver Broncos

The Denver Broncos started to play in 1960 as a member of the AFC then later joined the National Football League as part of a NFL-AFL merger.

On August 14, 1959 The Denver Broncos was founded, when Bob Howsman then owner of of a minor league baseball team was granted the AFL charter franchise. The Denver Broncos won the Boston Patriots 13-10 in 1960 September 9th which was the first ever AFL game. The Broncos became the first ever American Football League football team to defeat an National Football League football team on august 5, 1967 after defeating the Detroit Lions by the score of 13-7 in a preseason football game. The Denver Broncos were not successful in the 60's after posting a record of 39-97-4 in the football league.

The Denver Broncos have played in the Super Bowl 6 times winning 2 of the Super Bowls in the 97-98 football seasons. The Broncos didn't manage to have a winning football season until 1973 after having 13 years without a winning season. The Broncos in the football leagues first 10 year history were the only original American Football League team to have not played in a title game. In 1965 the Denver Broncos almost lost it's franchise, but then a local ownership took control of the football team that year and started to build the team.

The Broncos in 1977 under a Rookie Coach named Red Miller as well as the Orange Crush Defense a nickname they picked up from the early 70's and Craig Morton a aging Quarterback took the Denver Broncos to their first playoff game as well as their first Super Bowl but was beat by the Dallas Cowboys by a score of 27 to 10.

The Denver Broncos lost to the New York Giants, 39-20 in Super Bowl XXI, Washington Redskins, 42-10 in Super Bowl XXII, and to the San Francisco 49ers, 55-10 in Super Bowl XXIV, which were the most lopsided scoring differential in Super Bowl history.

The Denver Broncos debuted Terrell Davis rookie running back in 1995, where he would lead the Denver Broncos to their first Super Bowl win in 1997 against the Green Bay Packers, 31-24 in Super Bowl XXXII. Broncos John Elway had 22 passing attempts and only completed 12 of those also having one throwing interception and no touchdowns, but Terrell Davis had three touchdowns and rushed for 157 yards to earn the MVP honor this while he had blurred vision due to severe migraine headaches.
