While a data center is extremely valuable and useful in keeping companies and websites running, they're not the most glamorous of places. However, their appearances have increased in Hollywood movies and hit television shows. It's hard to deny that malfunctioning robots, or a maze of endless rows of computers makes for a tense setting that does wonders for any film. Even though these scenes may not be completely accurate to the operations of these technological hubs, they allow our minds to wander and imagine how machines might play a larger role in our lives in the future.
House of Cards
The extremely popular television show House of Cards is a tale full of twists, turns and deception. In an attempt to discover the truth behind his girlfriend's death, a reporter tries to steal information from an enormous data center. Unfortunately he's caught, but the setting of an underground tech basement with endless switches and plugs keeps the tension high throughout the encounter.
Skyfall
When James Bond meets the villain in the movie Skyfall, he's surrounded by rows and rows of machinery. We soon come to realize it's a data center right in the mansion's living room, but with no cabinets hiding the wires or attempt to improve the appearance. These bare-boned devices have us imagining Bond throwing his enemy through a row of supercomputers. This is, no doubt, one of the most unique prop devices used in a recent movie.
Minority Report
The joy of watching sci-fi movies is imagining the future and operations that might govern our lives differently someday. The film Minority Report, set in the distant future, imagines a different kind of data center used to arrest people before they commit a crime. It's hard to forget the main character's vision board in which he can pull up all kinds of information including DMV licenses, addresses and the foreseen video of an impending murder. Though this type of device doesn't fall within the typical definition, it's exciting to imagine how the future could evolve into something similar to Minority Report's vision.
A Space Odyssey: 2001
Stanley Kubrick's film, A Space Odyssey: 2001, follows a group of astronauts navigating their way to Jupiter with the help of the super computer HAL 9000. This highly evolved singular data center regulates the ship's navigation while the astronauts rest, as well as the air flow and operations on the ship such as opening and closing of hatches. When HAL 9000 boasts that his generation of supercomputers has never malfunctioned, we can guess that he'll be the first to disobey his masters. There's nothing more frightening than being deep in space up against the cold logic of a supercomputer. This film wouldn't hold the same tension without the machines calling the shots.
In our world of growing and evolving technology, these tech hubs are directly relevant to our lives now more than ever. It isn't surprising to see their involvement in Hollywood films in a character's effort to uncover hidden data, overthrow a disobedient operator or catch future criminals.
